The Revolution of Training with Line Shots
In the world of pool, mastering the cue ball is the key to achieving a level of excellence. A crucial aspect that separates average players from professionals is precise control of the cue ball. If you want to elevate your game to the next level, perfecting the technique of cue ball positioning and control is essential. In this article, we will explore an innovative and extremely effective training system: line shot training.
There is a remarkably innovative training system that focuses on improving the precise positioning and control of the cue ball. This system not only enhances accuracy in your shots but also ensures that the cue ball stays exactly where you want it, setting up the next shot. The line shot method is designed to elevate your skill to a high and consistent level of performance.
The Importance of Cue Ball Control in the Game
In American pool, even small inaccuracies with the cue ball can greatly complicate the game. When we fail to position the cue ball properly, not only does it become more difficult to pocket the next ball, but positioning for the following shot also becomes a challenge. The essence of pool is to leave the balls in favorable positions to facilitate the next shot and ultimately pocket the last ball successfully. Imagine perfecting your positioning technique to the point where the cue ball stays exactly where you want it with 100% accuracy. The impact on the number of shots and overall performance would be monumental.

Line Shot Training
At eProCoach, we have developed a meticulous approach to improving the game through line shot training. After an exhaustive three-week study analyzing numerous professional pool matches, we identified a list of shots that frequently recur in the game. These shots, known as line shots, are executed along the ‘line of good play,’ meaning the optimal position for the next shot. We have filtered these shots and created a list of approximately 400 line shots, representing the most common scenarios in pool.
Hook Shots: Recovering the Line of Good Play
While practicing the 400 line shots and maintaining an effectiveness above 95% can elevate your game to new heights, achieving absolute perfection is a challenging goal. Sometimes, the cue ball may stray from the desired direction. Additionally, complicated situations can arise when an opponent has interfered. This is where hook shots come into play. Hook shots are techniques that allow you to get back on the line of good play from a less-than-ideal position. Although a comprehensive compilation of hook shots would be extensive, at eProCoach we have identified and trained common patterns and specific skills, such as the proper use of the cushion, which also help in recovering the line of good play.
Practical Examples: Line Shots and Hook Shots
To better illustrate the concept, let’s consider an example of a line shot: a shot where you need to position the cue ball in a specific spot to ensure that the next shot is easy and effective. Another example could be a hook shot that allows you to recover the line of good play from an incorrect position. For instance, a hook shot that focuses on adjusting the cue ball to align with the next ball, or one that enhances your overall positioning skills.

This is a line shot: the cue ball is perfectly positioned so that we can easily pocket the target ball and place the cue ball in the highlighted area for another easy shot. If we train this exercise until we achieve 95% accuracy, the next shot will certainly be straightforward, allowing us to finish the table.

This is a hook shot: it involves a shot where the cue ball is either short or long, depending on how you view it, and we are forced to use a cushion shot to return to the highlighted area, to the ‘line of good play.
The Utility of Line Shot Training
Line shot training is an invaluable tool at all levels, but especially for beginners, as it helps develop a keen awareness of positional play. While this method is not intended to be the sole approach to training in pool, it is highly beneficial when combined with other methods, such as focusing on weaknesses, error detection, and developing a feel for the game. No matter your level, it’s remarkable what line shot training can do for your positional play.
